Make sure you're hearing and being heard clearly during your call by setting up your audio devices correctly. This guide walks you through everything you need to know about configuring your microphone and speaker settings.
Speaker settings / Your speaker settings control where sound plays from during your call.
How it works:
- Select speaker*: Choose your preferred audio output (e.g., built-in speakers, headphones, or external speakers)
- Test speaker: Play a test sound to confirm audio is coming through the correct device
- Adjust speaker volume: Set how loud audio is for calls. This does not affect your system volume
Microphone settings / Your microphone settings manage how you sound to others in the call.
How it works:
-
Allow microphone access: Sermo Mobile needs to connect with your microphone in order to successfully begin a call. You will be prompted to do this within Sermo Mobile – but if you deny it too many times you need to manage it within the individual browser or device settings you’re using.
- Google Chrome (Windows/macOS)
- iOS (iPhone/iPad)
- Android
- Select microphone*: Pick your preferred input device from a list of available microphones
- Adjust microphone volume: Control your input sensitivity to ensure you're not too quiet or too loud
*Important: If you have headphones or earbuds connected, audio will automatically route through them. Otherwise, the call will default to speakerphone, and you won’t be able to switch during the call. If this is a problem, connect your headphones before the call starts. This behavior applies to many device and browser combinations, but not all. Check the compatibility chart below for full details.
Switching audio devices during a call
Need to change your mic or speaker during a call?
- Look for the [audio icon] on the phone screen
- Select the new device you'd like to use
Note: In-call audio switching is only supported on Desktop using Chrome, Edge, or similar browsers. It is not supported on Apple browsers or devices (e.g., Safari, iPhone).
Device & browser compatibility
Some features (like selecting devices or adjusting volume) may vary depending on the browser and device you're using.

Troubleshooting
If you're not seeing your devices or things don't sound right:
- Check that your browser has permission to access your microphone and speaker
- Make sure your devices are properly connected and not muted
- Refresh the page or try a different browser (we recommend Chrome for full functionality)
- Check & Disable Exclusive Mode (Windows): Windows allows apps to take full control of audio devices, which can cause issues with Sermo Mobile. Follow these steps to disable Exclusive Mode for both playback and recording devices:
-
Playback Device:
- Right-click the speaker icon → Sound settings
- Scroll → More sound settings
- Go to the Playback tab → Select your main speaker → Properties
- Navigate to the Advanced tab
- ❌ Uncheck:
- 'Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device'
- 'Give exclusive mode applications priority'
- Apply changes
-
Recording Device:
Repeat the same steps under the Recording tab for your microphone.📌 This fix resolves:
- No ringing sound
- No audio after the first call
- Audio works only once per reboot
-
Playback Device:
- Windows “Communications” Auto-Muting Check: Windows may automatically mute audio during calls. To disable this:
- Go to More sound settings
- Navigate to the Communications tab
- Select 'Do nothing'
- Apply changes"
